10 Tips for Finding the Right Assisted Living Community

10 Tips for Finding the Right Assisted Living Community

October 29th, 2014

If your family has decided that an assisted living community is the right choice for an aging relative, a large part of determining senior care is off of your plate. However, you still have some big choices to make — how will you find the right assisted living community?

Here are some tips to help narrow down your list.

  1. Research qualifications and training. These are the people who will look out for the health, safety, and wellbeing of your elderly relative, so be sure that their certifications and education are ideal.

  2. Look at communities online. Visiting the assisted living community’s website will give you an overview of what it’s like — photo galleries and testimonials can give a first impression of which ones may or may not be a good fit.

  3. Visit the facility in person. Get a feel for the location, including residences, meal options, and recreation.

  4. Check out safety measures. Mobility and safety are often problematic for aging adults. Find out how the assisted living communities you are considering handle these concerns.

  5. Consider location and accessibility. Will you be able to easily visit your relative?

  6. Ask others for their opinions. Get reviews or references from other clients and families.

  7. Get a professionals help. Your relative’s doctor or other care providers may have good leads on reputable communities.

  8. Think about extra services. If there are special amenities available, like on-site hairdressing or transportation services, your relative will be able to get more out of their community.

  9. Find good staff. Choose a facility staffed with friendly, patient individuals who do not seem rushed or unpleasant.

  10. Ask the senior. Maybe your relative has friends in a specific community, or likes one facility versus another. This will be his or her home, so when possible be sure to be inclusive.

Take the time to research your options for the right assisted living care facility and you’ll be able to make a great choice for your loved one.
