How Penticton Seniors Benefit From Increased Spring Sunlight

April 28th, 2021

Winter is finally over, and—for a reason that we can go without mentioning—this winter felt like a particularly long one. In any event, spring is well underway and most of us are eager to get out and enjoy some sunshine! Besides the pleasant sensation of warm afternoon sun on one’s skin, there are a host of reasons why it is good for Penticton’s seniors to get some regular, moderate doses of sunlight.

Human Photosynthesis

Okay, it’s not remotely related to what plants do, but humans need sunlight too! Research shows that sunlight helps your body to produce its own Vitamin D, which contributes to healthy bones, increases the effectiveness of white blood cells, and boosts the immune system.

The Happy Chemical

Sunlight is related to our brain’s production of serotonin, a chemical that is related to our calmness and ability to focus. Avoiding the sun for too long can lead to seasonal bouts of depression. Conversely, getting some regular sun can help to boost our happiness and sense of wellbeing.

A Natural Remedy

Moderate, measured doses of sunlight on a regular basis can offer relief to some skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and vitiligo.

Quality of Sleep

Sunlight helps with our body’s production of melatonin. This hormone signals our body to become tired as it gets dark outside. If you’ve ever noticed being particularly tired after a lot of time spent in the sun, melatonin is largely to thank.

Don’t Overdo It!

Especially in the early spring, people tend to underestimate the low sun. Just because it’s not sweltering hot, they reason, they can’t get a sunburn. And, we tend to forget that we haven’t been exposed to the sun all winter and don’t have any sort of base tan. When venturing out into the sun—in any time of year—always remember to wear sunscreen.
